I was tossed off X for a while for pissing off pro-Palestinians who are very assiduous about complaining to the management. Originally I thought, “Great,” but I thought better of it and appealed and they reinstated me with a warning. X affords a real feast of evidence about the catastrophic moral decline of the NuDemocratsᵀᴹ.

Here’s a good one.

“Mike from PA” is a Twitch partner and a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Got nearly 54K followers.1

As a DSA goon, he’s defending Graham Platner, who is getting deeper and deeper into a pool of shit-filled quicksand of his own making. (Paywalled if you can’t link to archived.)

The only way he can discredit a journalist is by linking them to… you guessed it — Israel.

That’s the Democrats now: disagree with “Mike from PA” and you’re a “zio” and shut the fuck up.

I looked online and got this description of “Mike from PA”:

Mike from PA (real name Michael Beyer) is a well-known figure within a specific niche of online left-wing politics, but he is not a major player or decision-maker in the broader political landscape or the official Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) organization.

The point of keeping track of this is not to chart the day-to-day temperature and fights. That gets really boring really quickly. It’s the big picture. I will not be paying daily attention to this — too soul destroying. But we need to be aware of what’s out there, and I have to admit that I wasn’t aware of the DSA before right about now.

I confess: I was quite ignorant. I associated it with Bernie, an ineffectual fraud who moved from multiracial, multicultural Brooklyn to be a socialist in near lily-white Vermont and dingbats like AOC. I associated “socialist” with Jews who were 80 years old when I was a kid.

So I looked into it.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is an actual 501(c)(4) — a so-called social welfare organization. It was founded in 1982 by Michael Harrington, a socialist who, to my knowledge, was distinguished by total banality and unoriginality, who never did anything — except found the DSA. Its membership exploded following Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign.

Rather than running third-party candidates, the DSA uses a highly disciplined ground game of young volunteers to back progressive insurgents in Democratic primaries, successfully unseating moderate incumbents in low-turnout local and state elections. Smart.

This strategy has elevated high-profile federal lawmakers like AOC and Rashida Tlaib while establishing powerful local blocs in cities like New York. By inserting these politicians into office and organizing aggressively on the ground, the DSA has dragged mainstream Democratic rhetoric to the left, making once-fringe policies like Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and strict tenant protections standard debate topics. Zionism is next. The DSA is fiercely anti-Israel, as we shall see.

You don’t join the Democratic party as a member of the DSA. Its takeover of the Democratic Party is entirely unofficial.

Here is how a 501(c)(4) like the DSA pulls it off:

• Using the Open Primary System: Unlike many European democracies where political parties are closed clubs that pick their own candidates, the United States uses public primary elections. Anyone can register as a Democrat, get on the ballot, and run. The DSA takes advantage of this open backdoor by recruiting their own members to run as Democrats. That’s how AOC ran, and won against a tired old Irish-American Democrat.

• Acting as a Shadow Infrastructure: To win an election, a candidate needs a platform, a campaign team, donor lists, and people to knock on doors. Mainstream Democrats get this from the official party apparatus. The DSA provides a parallel, shadow infrastructure for progressive insurgents. When a candidate gets the DSA endorsement, they instantly inherit a highly disciplined campaign machine.

• Forming Voting Blocs After Winning: Once these DSA-backed candidates win their Democratic primaries and coast to victory in general elections, they enter congress or state legislatures with a specific allegiance. Instead of voting with the Democratic establishment, they organize themselves into a tight caucus—a faction—that votes together, threatens to block legislation, and negotiates as a single unit.

By combining the fundraising flexibility of a 501(c)(4) with a dedicated volunteer army, the DSA behaves exactly like an internal political party, using the Democratic Party’s own ballot line to build institutional power.

Pretty clever. Sounds like another group I’ve heard of. What might they have been called?

The Bolsheviks. Classic “entryism,” a term coined in the 1930s to describe a specific strategy mapped out by the Marxist theorist Leon Trotsky. He advised his followers to enter larger, mainstream social democratic parties rather than remaining in isolated, fringe groups. The goal was to radicalize the members of those larger parties from the inside and eventually win control of the organization.

Today, political scientists use it more broadly to describe any highly organized faction that joins a larger, established political party to alter its platform, use its resources, or capture its ballot line.

The core similarity to the Bolsheviks is obvious. The Bolsheviks successfully used entryism by embedding themselves into existing trade unions, local worker councils (soviets), and political groups to systematically build power from within. The DSA follows a similar blueprint by organizing within the structure of the Democratic Party rather than trying to build a new party from scratch.

The massive difference is that the Bolsheviks operated under a repressive, closed Tsarist regime and targeted institutions that lacked open, democratic safeguards. The DSA operates entirely within the legal, modern U.S. primary system, exploiting the fact that voter turnout in local primaries is typically low enough for a highly disciplined, motivated minority to swing the outcome.

While the Bolsheviks sought the complete overthrow of the state and its institutions, the DSA’s immediate goal is to use this inside-the-party mechanism to shift the existing legislative and electoral baseline. But what are their long-term goals?

Their explicit long-term objective is to systematically phase capitalism out from below and replace it with a fully socialist society. They don’t pussyfoot around on that. They’re brazen.

As for Israel, they’re clear:

Support self-determination for the Palestinian people and a political solution to the current crisis premised on the guarantee of basic human rights, including an end to the military occupation, an end to discrimination against Palestinians within Israel, and the right of return of refugees, as outlined in the call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

Discontinue US support of Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people, including an end to all military aid and resisting the “normalization” of relations between the Israeli government and other governments.

I’ll be looking at the DSA more carefully.

“Tick tock” on X isn’t a countdown; it’s a veiled threat to signal that someone’s time is running out, that some revelation or humiliation or comeuppance is imminent. It’s the digital equivalent of tapping a watch while staring someone down, theatrical menace. People who use that phrase are trash.

Yesterday, in “The New Order,” I argued several things: that the two major parties function as opposing cultural machines, that the Democrats, due to the immigration which is their purpose, have become irremediably hostile to Israel, and that the Democratic Party will offer candidates who will seek to disentangle the many ties that bind Israel to the US. I didn’t go into how much this will harm Israel’s ability to function, leaving that to the imagination. I just listed them. That was bad enough.

I argued that this is a function of the identity of the the Democratic Party — the country’s intake system—the party of cities, immigrants, churn, and constant demographic change. Historically they absorb newcomers, manage (and exploit) ethnic friction, and operate as a composite coalition of disparate groups. They occasionally force the US to outright rupture, as they did in 1861 and the 1960s.1

Republicans are the ballast, the party of the long‑settled core, oriented toward “the sacred union,” holding the center together. They are the home of people who feel ownership of the national narrative.

In this model, American politics is a recurring tension between a party that processes demographic transformation and a party that stabilizes the national story.

One thing I didn’t go into yesterday: neither party has a fixed relationship to centralized power or states’ rights; those positions shift with circumstance. Democrats once defended states’ prerogatives in the Jacksonian and antebellum eras, then became the architects of federal expansion in the 20th century. Republicans began as the most aggressively centralizing party in American history. The party of Lincoln crushed secession but later adopted the language of devolution and local control. These reversals aren’t contradictions so much as coalition management. “Federal power” and “states’ rights” are costumes the parties wear depending on what their coalitions need at a given moment.

What is stable is the deeper structural pattern: Democrats are the animal that eats, metabolizes, and lives on demographic and cultural churn, while Republicans are the force that stabilizes and consolidates.

Democrats build outward from urban, factional pluralism, and use federal power when it helps manage a diverse, conflict-prone coalition.

Republicans build inward from continuity and even when they speak the language of decentralization, it’s in service of protecting that story from fragmentation.

The emotional centers of the parties are opposites: one welcomes flux and diversity, the other stability and commonality. This is conservatism, US style: not landed gentry but the sacred Founding of the Republic.

That stabilizing instinct in the Republican Party has is genetically linked right back to Hamilton: the belief that the Union is prior to the states, that national coherence is a moral good, and that the country is one thing, not a negotiable compact. Lincoln inherited that metaphysics and turned it into a civic religion during the Civil War. The modern GOP still carries it, even when its rhetoric points in other directions.

Democrats inherit the Jeffersonian instinct — plural, local, centrifugal. It’s worthwhile to remember that Jefferson loved the bloodiness of the French Revolution. He was committed to the Jacobin terror. Adams abhorred it. So did Hamilton.

Right now, as we speak, that tension is being enacted with new ethnicities. Jews have simply been turfed out of the Democratic Party. You can’t change or fight this anymore than you can pacify an earthquake.

This is not a prediction, it’s a description.

The Democratic Party already contains a fully developed anti‑Israel faction. It’s not fringe. It’s the beating heart of the rising coalition. This isn’t about policy disagreements or repudiating Cold War realpolitik. It’s a moral crusade.

The Ben Rhodes generation — the urban liberal intellectuals who shape Democratic foreign‑policy thinking — sees the U.S.–Israel relationship as a moral blot on America’s conscience, no less than a previous generation saw South Africa. I’d go even further. South Africa was always a business relationship. It was never a “special relationship.” There was no guilt over what might or might not have been done in WW2, there was no fervent devotion of an American demographic. Our relationship to South Africa was about commodities prices.2

Demographic change has cleared the runway for them. The old urban ethnic machines that once tied Democrats to Israel are gone; the new coalition is younger, dominated by immigrants from the Third World (many of them Muslim. They hate Israel. Not its settlement policies. Its existence.

They already have the entire disentanglement playbook mapped out. They don’t need to invent anything. All they need is a competent, non‑crazy politician to carry the banner. That person will appear, because the constituency is already there. They successfully installed a mayor in New York City. What next?

I know that many Jewish Democrats are saying they’ll fight for their party. This is a fool’s errand. Look what happened to Jake Auchincloss.

Every day I see another example of humiliation and degradation of Jewish politicians in the Democratic Party. The latest is Jake Auchincloss who expressed dismay at Graham Platner’s Nazi tattoo, for which he was reprimanded by Hasan Piker as an “Israel-firster.”

Hasan Piker. Slamming a Jewish politician for criticizing a man with a Totenkopf tattoo on his chest as an “Israel firster.”

He might as well have called Auchincloss a filthy kike.

Auchincloss apologized.

Sanders is beneath contempt, but all these Jewish politicians crowding the trough like pigs, competing to kiss Jew-haters’ asses is something I’ve never seen in American politics.

I don’t think I can remember a black politician ever apologizing to a Dixiecrat for anything.

It’s beyond disgraceful.

Scanning the news about the Democratic party’s latest shenanigans is a daily exercise in horror.

Adam Hanawy, like Bassem Youssef, is an Egyptian-American. Like Youssef, he is a physician. We get the best Muslim immigrants. Not like those British chip shop owners.

They hate us too.

AOC, who gives in to every quirk of the radical left (she used to call women “menstruators”) campaigns to all male crowds in a hijab.

I wonder what these guys think of Jews.

No one is going to “take back” the Democratic Party from this crowd.

They are the Democratic Party.

What will American Jews do? I make it a rule never to say “should” here because it’s silly. There is truly nothing more pathetic than a guy on Substack telling people what they “should” do - it’s the equivalent of a drunk banging on the bar at 2:00 a.m.

But I’ll say it: I think Jews should become Republican. I think all Americans who care about the actual country and not a jostling crowd of foreigners who happen to be in the republic should.

But they won’t. Because to become Republican is to become of America and not merely in it. The Democratic Party has been for American Jews a buffer zone, a place where they could LARP as Americans but not really be Americans. Times’ up for that, guys.

Choosing the Republican Party would mean giving up something, though.

The Republicans, too, are changing, and the next generation of Republican politicians will not be shaped by the old evangelical attachment to Israel. The emotional core of the GOP — the Hamilton‑Lincoln instinct to protect the Union and subordinate foreign entanglements to national coherence — is now expressed through an “America First” lens. That doesn’t produce the Democrats’ moral hostility, but it does produce a cold, transactional skepticism: every alliance must justify itself in terms of American interest. No sentiment, no mythology, no special pleading. A future Republican politician formed by this worldview will not call for “disentanglement,” but they will absolutely call for a reframing: a narrower, harder, more conditional relationship defined by American priorities alone.

That’s the choice: a pragmatic relationship and demonization.

During the post October 7 agony, a strange pattern3 emerged: the noisiest and most vicious pro-Palestinian encampments were at the Ivy Leagues and other snotty selective schools that Jews love to brag we dominate. And yeah, we do. How many books were written about Jewish overrepresentation at

Let’s do a comparison. While violence engulfed (names) let’s look at two Texas universities: University of Texas at Austin, and Southern Methodist University. Students at UT Austin tried to set up a small protest encampment on a campus lawn, which the university had already said was not allowed. Because they were using the property in a prohibited way and refused to leave when told, police moved in quickly and arrested dozens of people. Officers in riot gear and on horseback used pepper spray and physical force to disperse the crowds, resulting in the arrest of nearly 80 students, faculty, and journalists over several days.

It was violent and made headlines. After the police cleared the attempted encampment, the situation wasn’t “over.” Students kept protesting on campus, but they didn’t try to build another camp because police shut down any attempt immediately. The later protests were shorter, more mobile, and constantly watched by police, so nothing like the first confrontation happened again. Notable, but not on the level of Columbia, Harvard, or MIT, where university life was completely disrupted.

At Southern Methodist University (SMU) things were even quieter. Right after the October 7 attacks, SMU President R. Gerald Turner issued a standard campus message. The statement expressed deep concern for affected families (both Israeli and Palestinian), explicitly condemned both antisemitism and Islamophobia, and pointed students toward counseling and pastoral support. It didn't "clamp down" on anything; it focused on maintaining a welcoming campus environment. (This is the kind of message that enrages hardcore hasbaristas. I think it was perfect.)

The campus culture is starkly different - and so are the institutional rules. Unlike public universities that faced immediate First Amendment legal battles over spontaneous protests, private SMU relied on strict, pre-existing administrative policies. Their rules require students to submit outdoor event requests at least five days in advance and completely bar outside, non-university individuals from organizing on campus. This combination of a less activist student culture and tightly regulated bureaucratic space kept the Dallas campus entirely orderly.

And maybe there’s this: the students at SMU had no interest in demonstrations for Palestinians. Imagine that.

Life went on at SMU.

The pattern is unmistakable:

For generations, ambitious Jewish families knew the path forward: aim for Harvard, Columbia, Penn, Yale — the elite colleges and universities of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. These schools were not just prestigious academic institutions. They were symbols of Jewish ascent in America, places where a community once shut out by quotas had built vibrant campus lives and become vital to the intellectual and cultural fabric of higher education.

That roadmap is now breaking down. Across Jewish day schools, synagogue youth groups, and Jewish and Zionist family dinner tables, a profound debate is unfolding. Parents and students are asking a new question: Should you still chase the Ivy League dream, hoping to carve out a space for Jewish identity on campuses increasingly hostile to open expression and Israel?

Or should you go where you can thrive, to universities that welcome you as a student and as a Jew, where you can build community and simply live without fear or exhaustion?

I will go there.

Top Jews are like top people everywhere. They like to run things - A place at the table isn’t our style. We want to be at the head of the table. And going to an Ivy (or Stanford or Duke or MIT) gets you a seat at the table. It’s the equivalent of a British courtesy title. It can’t be revoked no matter how bad your behavior. “British Lord dies in drug den” is still a British Lord. Same goes for Harvard grad.

As David Bernstein tirelessly documents on X, the Ivy betrayal is a deep personal wound. Bernstein went to Brandeis, home of the “didn’t quite get into an Ivy” student body, and then to Yale Law. He feels this in his gut. He tweets a LOT about Harvard.

About SMU? Not so much.

While David Bernstein is bemoaning “our” loss of Harvard, normal Jewish kids are going to Tulane, SMU, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest.

I seem to have strayed from the topic - but I really haven’t. Jews are done with the Democratic party, and the Democratic party is done with the Jews.

That doesn’t mean Jews will abandon the party en masse right now. I saw an older lady in the part near the Museum of Natural History the other day. I can’t be sure she’s Jewish but… I think so. She wore big pink plastic earrings that spelled out “FUCK ICE.” They looked something like this:

I wanted to ask her if I could take a picture of them, posing as an ally, but I didn’t because I couldn’t. I just can’t do that sort of thing.

I wanted to ask her if she thought that changing America’s demographics to welcome large numbers of people who want her dead was a good idea but I didn’t because I don’t do that nonsense anymore. (I used to. I realized somewhere along the line it was dumb.)

I just looked at her and made a mental note to tell you.

She is representative of the millions of American Jews who hate Republicans because its a core part of their identity.

Earlier I said I’ve never seen anything like this in the US. But I have seen it in Jewish history. Allow me the following analogy.

In 1391, anti‑Jewish pogroms swept through the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon — from Seville and Córdoba to Valencia and Barcelona.4

The Jews of Christian Spain deserve much more attention than they’ve gotten. Suffice it to say they presaged uncannily the Ashkenazi accomplishment of pre-WW2 Germany. They were hyperliterate and concentrated in law, medicine, and trade.

The pogroms were triggered by a clerical firebrand, Ferrand Martínez, whose years of Jew-hating agitation in Seville — ignored or weakly checked by the crown — primed a volatile urban population already strained by economic crisis, plague aftershocks, and political instability. When local authorities failed to stop him, the violence he’d been stoking finally exploded.

Shocking scenes of violence spread to the major cities of Christian Spain — Seville, Córdoba, Toledo, Burgos, Valencia, Barcelona, Palma. Everywhere the pattern was the same: Jews were given a choice — convert or die. Some chose death.

Most chose conversion.

We know this from two independent sources. First, the written records: baptismal rolls, municipal reports, royal correspondence, inquisitorial files. Spain kept meticulous documentation. The documentation is confirmed by genetics: modern Iberian Jewish‑descended populations show clear signatures of mass 14th–15th‑century conversion — exactly what the written record describes.

It’s not the story that Jewish historians like to focus on: Jews bravely choosing death or exile over conversion. Roughly half to two-thirds of the Jews in Castile and Aragon chose conversion. I personally think it’s the higher bound. Just for the completists among us, some Jews did survive. Upshot: 65% converted, 20% remained Jewish, and 15% were killed.

The Jews’ loss was Spain’s gain: these conversos contributed greatly to Spanish culture. The old line was that Spanish humanism was thin, derivative, and imported. An American academic, Kevin Ingram says no.

He believes that Spanish humanism was not thin and not derivative — and that you simply can’t understand it without the conversos. They were everywhere in the intellectual, legal, and administrative strata that incubated the movement. Their marginal status pushed them toward interior spirituality, toward texts, and reform. What emerged was rich, deep, indigenous — and unmistakably shaped by Jews.

American Jews aren’t faced with “convert or die.” They’re faced with “vote for a party you’ve been raised to think is foreign to everything that’s ‘Jewish’ or suck it up and stay where you are.’

I say they’ll stay where they are. And staying with the Democratic Party isn’t continuity; is a modern form of conversion. By clinging to a tribal affiliation that’s now controlled by hostile groups, the American Jews perform an agonizing act of self-abnegation (such as apologizing for daring to register dismay at Nazi symbols on Democratic candidates), surrendering historical memory in exchange for the hollow comfort of the familiar and the empty promise of inclusion and security. It is the tragic hope that by adopting the new language of the orthodoxy, the converted might finally be spared the hostility that has already taken root at the party’s core.

Thirty years ago I saw something on TV that never left me. But I get ahead of myself.

We can’t understand what’s going on in the Democratic party with respect to Jews and Israel before you get a handle on what the Democratic Party is (and the Republicans, too, but the focus here is on the Democrats). I’m going to make a structural argument about how the parties function as cultural machines.

The Democratic Party has always been a strange composite. In the South it was the vehicle of the slaveholding order, but in the North it played a completely different role: the intake valve of America. In the cities and ports it became the party of newcomers, churn, ethnic politics, and abrasive cultural friction — the place where the shock of immigration was absorbed and slowly digested into the national fabric. That urban, immigrant-facing identity has been part of its story since the 19th century. This duality held until the Dixiecrats peeled off after 1965 and migrated into the Republican coalition. Whether the Republicans ever truly digested them is another question — and one I’ll get to later.

The Republicans are the party of the stable, landed core, born out of the self‑immolation of the Whigs — a party that proved unequal to the task of Union after booting the slavery question down too many corridors of compromise. They emerged in 1856 to rein in Democratic excesses and to stand for the Union — and over time became the party of people who’d been here long enough to feel ownership of the national story. They’re the ballast, the counterweight, the ones who say “enough” when the churn gets too fast. What they call “Heritage Americans” on X.1

The Democrats have always had a streak of fracture, centrifugal force, regionalism, and internal contradiction. The Republicans have always had a streak of consolidation, unionism, and “hold the center together.”

But it’s not 1856 — this is the post‑1965 America, with Jews weirdly and awkwardly absorbed into the old‑stock side because we’ve been here long enough to be familiar. And in that fracture, Jews — for the first time in Western history — end up on the “inside.”

That explains why Trump’s smartest and most ruthless consigliere on immigration is Stephen Miller.

I am not saying that most Jews agree with him. They do not. Most Jews are still staunch Democrats, but that’s because most people are a beat behind the music. Or half, or a quarter… doesn’t matter. A musician who is 1/64th behind the orchestra is out of step. The race car driver that’s a second behind the winner loses.

The Democratic party is no longer the party of Jews, Irish, Italians. It’s what Mamdani said in his victory speech: “Yemeni bodega owners, Mexican abuelas, Senegalese taxi drivers, and Uzbek nurses.”

It’s not the party where Jews comfortably rub shoulders with Catholics at the Al Smith Dinner. It’s the party where the Mayor of New York City commemorates “Nakba Day” on Israel’s independence day.

There is no point in bemoaning this. Recognize it and take action. You do not cry at an unveiling the way you cry at a funeral. You say goodbye, once, and forever.

So what did I see thirty years ago, and what did I think a few weeks ago?

I used to watch the The McLaughlin Group religiously. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, it’s so geeky. In my defense, McLaughlin was such a part of the culture SNL spoofed it2. I used to really enjoy it — “Eleanor, you’re swellanor!”

Somewhere along the line I realized it was a waste of time, but there was a period where I watched that show every Sunday morning. One of John’s regulars was a sardonic, overweight newsman, Jack Germond (played on SNL by John Goodman).

So, on this show (the real show) the group was discussing the upcoming Democratic convention — I forget which — and that someone had tried and failed to insert a pro-Palestinian plank. Something very vanilla by today’s standards. I don’t remember what it was, exactly, but it was enough to be a matter of discussion on the show. I remember his sneering dismissal of the “nutty pro-Palestinian plank.” I remember this word distinctly, “nutty.”

I remembered that because didn’t think it was nutty. I thought it was bound to happen. Thirty years ago.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when this crazy thought came to me out of nowhere:

“The Democrats would love to build gas chambers for Jews. If they could get away with it, they would build gas chambers and feed us all into them.”

It was one of those sudden, unhinged thoughts that exists only to be dismissed immediately, which I did. I’m spelling this out because these thoughts surface under stress — a flare of panic, a grotesque exaggeration your mind throws up so you can smack it down and steady yourself. It’s the nervous system stepping in to regulate the mind.

So, there I was, sane and rational, rejecting “nutty” thoughts… and then I heard about Maureen Galindo, a candidate for Congress in the San Antonio area, who put this up on her Instagram (like many clinically insane people, she speaks in the third person):3

The posted this after she had actually won the primary — but not by enough, so a runoff was held, which she lost, 59% to 41%.

Of course, all the good leftist Democrats immediately distanced themselves from her. Of course they did. And implied she was a Republican plant4. They never said that before she said she would imprison and castrate Zionists. She was good enough for Track AIPAC and ActBlue before that.

She crossed the line with the ICE thing, and castration. But yeah, call her a Republican plant. Whatever works.

OK, she lost. But permit me this fantasy.

A smart non-insane young politician comes up with an “Israel disentanglement” plank.

I could be here all afternoon laying this out, so let’s just do bullet points. He or she could advocate:

Diplomatic and political ties

• Downgrade representation. Recall the U.S. ambassador; keep relations at chargé d’affaires level.

• Suspend or terminate bilateral agreements: Defense cooperation MOUs, science and tech accords, tax treaties.

• Change UN posture: Stop shielding Israel with automatic vetoes; abstain or vote in favor of resolutions the U.S. has historically blocked; support recognition of Palestinian statehood

Of the three, the shift in the UN posture will hurt the most. The MOU is unimportant. The UN is important, no matter how much people scoff at it.

Once Israel is exposed to the full weight of the UN system, the consequences start to stack — legal exposure, diplomatic isolation, and economic pressure — and even Israel’s hard right will eventually acknowledge those constraints.

Military and intelligence cooperation

• End offensive weapons transfers: No bombs, artillery, aircraft, or munitions usable in offensive operations; restrict exports of dual‑use tech.

• Suspend joint exercises and training: No joint drills, no officer exchanges, no U.S. participation in Israeli training programs.

• Curtail intelligence sharing: Limit or end real‑time intel sharing, especially on targeting; restrict joint SIGINT/tech projects.

This is where disentanglement stops being symbolic and starts biting into the security architecture.

Economic, trade, and financial links

• Revoke or suspend trade preferences: End any special trade status; treat Israel as a normal third country or impose targeted restrictions.

• Sanction state entities and officials: Use Magnitsky‑style tools against specific ministries, units, or leaders deemed responsible for abuses.

• Limit U.S. government exposure: Prohibit federal agencies and pension funds from holding Israeli sovereign debt or investing in state‑owned enterprises.

This doesn’t criminalize private commerce, but it pulls the U.S. state out of the economic relationship and stigmatizes it.

Institutional and civil‑society cooperation

• Universities and research: Bar federal funding (NIH, NSF, DoD, etc.) for projects with Israeli state institutions or military‑linked entities; end formal partnerships between U.S. public universities and Israeli universities tied to the state or military.

• Police and security exchanges: Prohibit U.S. law‑enforcement agencies from participating in training or exchange programs with Israeli police, military, or intelligence services.

• Municipal and state ties: Ban official sister‑city agreements, state‑level MOUs, and sub‑national cooperation with Israeli governmental bodies.

You don’t punish individuals; you sever formal cooperation between public institutions. Cutting ties between US and Israeli universities will be a catastrophe.

Multilateral and legal alignment

• ICC/ICJ cooperation: Support investigations, refuse to pressure courts on Israel’s behalf, and comply with arrest warrants or judgments where U.S. law allows.

• Sanctions coalitions: Work with EU and other allies to build coordinated sanctions regimes targeting Israeli state actors.

• Refugee and asylum policy: Treat victims of Israeli actions as presumptively eligible for protection; expand refugee quotas tied to the conflict.

Domestic constitutional red lines and messaging

A “smart Galindo” will focus on:

• No punishment for belief: No detention, no criminalization, no loss of rights for “Zionists” or anyone else based on viewpoint.

• Protected advocacy: Americans remain free to support Israel, donate to pro‑Israel groups, lobby, organize, and speak.

• Policy, not people: Every lever is aimed at states and institutions, not at citizens’ status or safety.

This is miles away from crazy Galindo’s carceral fantasies — but it’s very much on the same moral axis, just translated into statecraft instead of punishment.

This is far more realistic than Maureen Galindo’s ranting about ICE detention centers and castration. It’s inevitable. The Democratic Left is in open revolt. These are no longer “nutty” ideas:

The Democratic left already has a coherent anti‑Israel policy framework

And it’s not fringe anymore. It includes:

• conditioning military aid

• ending offensive weapons transfers

• blocking certain joint programs

• supporting ICC/ICJ investigations

• recognizing Palestinian statehood

• opposing U.S. vetoes at the UN

• restricting intelligence cooperation

All of it is already being debated inside the party. But on the left it’s not being debated: It’s the policy, Jedis.

We could zoom in on any one of these, but to me the universities are the most important part of the ecosystem.

A serious disentanglement agenda would begin by treating U.S.–Israel academic cooperation as a state‑supported ecosystem rather than a collection of private friendships. The federal government funds enormous amounts of research through NIH, NSF, DoD, DARPA, and the Department of Energy. Much of that money flows into joint projects with Israeli universities, especially those with defense or intelligence ties.

The next layer is the formal partnerships: memoranda of understanding between U.S. public universities and Israeli universities, joint degree programs, faculty exchanges, and shared research centers. These are not constitutional rights; they are administrative agreements.

Then there is the security‑training layer. Many U.S. police departments and campus security offices participate in exchange programs with Israeli police or military units.

You can also imagine restrictions on technology transfer. Universities are major nodes in the flow of dual‑use research — AI, cybersecurity, materials science, biotech.

Finally, there is the symbolic but potent step: instructing federal agencies to avoid partnerships, conferences, or consortia that include Israeli state institutions.

Universities won’t be told what ideas they may teach or what views their faculty may hold. They will be told that public money and public institutions will no longer be entangled with the institutions of a foreign state whose actions the U.S. finds unacceptable. That is the constitutional version of the instinct Galindo expressed in a destructive way.

I could go on (and on, and on), but I’ve made my point.

What’s untouchable now will become touchable very soon. The Democratic party is full of these guys, all seething. They’ve been thinking about this for years. Their playbooks are ready. I’ve only touched on the surface.5

Why now?

Because of demographic change — the very demographic change that major Jewish organizations welcomed and championed. The Democrats are just doing what they did in the 19th century and the 20th: importing and processing vast numbers of foreigners into their power base.

The two biggest boosters of anti-Zionism in the public sphere are middle-American white liberal woman, and “third world” immigrant men. It’s not even a Muslim thing — it’s “third world.” Saagar Enjeti and Ro Khanna are not Muslim.

Blacks and Jews no longer run the plantation. Black people, as it happens, were a moderating influence against the crazies with their “nutty” planks.

Remember the “killing fields” of South Carolina? How the black church ladies controlled who became the candidate? Biden was their last hurrah.

South Carolina is just another primary now. And they’ve died and done gone.

AOC is now the moderate.

It’s now the party of Hasan Piker, Zoran Mamdani, Jennifer Welch, Saagar Enjeti, and Krystal Ball.

Stupid doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

True: you can’t go full fruitcake and win elections. But you can sanely together an anti-Zionist plank and win. It’s only a matter of time.

Where are the Republicans in this? I’ll deal with that later.

But this is why I don’t care about the Democrats anymore. I don’t care about their post-mortems. I don’t care about their disavowals. I don’t care about what they say about this, that, or the other thing.

It ain’t my party anymore. I have to change affiliation.

But Jennifer Sey wrote something about Billie Jean King that jogged my memory, I commented, and someone asked a question in response to my comment. So I’m here to answer that question. It’s about memory, and how it works.1

Background. Jennifer wrote two posts about Billie Jean King’s position on “trans” inclusion in women’s sports. It’s puzzling: while King acknowledges male physical superiority she continues to support “trans” inclusion. Taken to its logical conclusion, “trans” inclusion would destroy the very thing that Billie Jean has worked her entire life to create. Jennifer observes:

Anyway, Billie Jean King is also gay and was dragged kicking and screaming (to some extent) out of the closet in 1981. She was married to a guy named Larry King — not that Larry King — and he was a lawyer and sports promoter. King had an affair with her former assistant, Marilyn Barnett. Barnett then sued King for palimony.

King held a press conference in 1981 to acknowledge the affair though her management wanted her to deny it ever happened. King lost $2M in brand deals after coming out. Certainly, it wasn’t easy back then.

Ok that’s who King was.

I was going to add a comment there, but I didn’t. No worries, Jen followed that post up with something about BJK’s relationship with the transgender tennis player, Renee Richards (born Richard Raskind) who, despite his paraphilia, sensibly came to the conclusion that men have an advantage over women in sports that can’t be overlooked, so I rolled my original observation into a more expansive comment:

It’s true about BJK and Renee Richards- but the same is also true of Martina. Richards was actually Martina’s coach for some time - 1981 to 1983 - that’s not overnight. But Martina came to her senses. We should give people credit for evolving.

However, what you point out here isn’t evolution, it’s a stubborn insistence on “I’m right.”

It so happens I know a little about the real BJK, having worked for her agent (International Management Group, “IMG”) in the early 1980s, in fact, during the Marilyn Barnett crisis. I didn’t work directly for her specific agent, Bob Kain, but I was there, in the NYC office, and dealt with her because they were cranking out a book to cover up after the crisis and I was working for their in-house literary agent.

I have no bad tea to spill. BJK was always a lovely person to deal with. But like most divas, it was her way or the highway. That’s fine until it isn’t.

One little fact about yesterday’s post with respect to her denial of the Barnett affair.

I could be wrong but here’s my memory. BJK issued the denial on her own before anyone at IMG had the chance to rein her in. They wanted her to stay quiet - on the instructions of her lawyers. Larry, her husband, was himself a lawyer. But for whatever reason she decided to go maverick and speak to the press herself. That is what necessitated the stage-managed press conference. Because the court case was in motion which would prove that she had had a relationship with Barnett. (Barnett lost the lawsuit on legal grounds but the relationship was never in doubt.)

BTW the book IMG commissioned was written by Frank DeFord, published by Viking in 1982. Even the name of the book was a point of contention but I’ll leave the story at that.

To recap, the Marilyn Barnett “palimony” lawsuit hit like a bomb2. Dates are important here. The suit was filed on April 28, 1981. BJK went ahead on her own and spoke to the press, denying it. Her then agent, Bob Kain, would never have advised her to blab to the press — and Billie Jean was known to blab to the press. She knew every tennis writer, and many others. Then the denial became untenable, the press conference was called on May 1. This is a fast turn of events.

After the press conference the esteemed writer Frank Deford was contracted to write a quickie biography of Billie Jean. Frank was chosen because he was more than a hack sportswriter; he had a literary reputation, and knew tennis well.3

Frank chose the original title: Misfit.

Billie Jean blew a gasket.

I distinctly remember my boss, Bev Norwood, telling me that. Bev was a small, witty, chain‑smoking North Carolinian who could strip a story down to minimal words and maximum punch. He was a golf specialist who didn’t take tennis all that seriously. Dan Jenkins used him as the model for the character Smokey Barwood in a few of his novels.

The name Maverick was substituted, the book was written and published, and that was that…

Until I looked around a few days ago for Maverick and couldn’t find it. The book was there, alright: as Billie Jean, by Frank Deford, but Maverick? Nowhere.

Was my memory wrong? No! I remember this distinctly and…

By accident or divine will, this popped up:

My memory was off but not by much.

Here’s what must have happened. Frank named the book. Viking entered it into the ISBN database as a working title. Billie Jean saw it and went nuts objected strenuously. Misfit was never printed. Maverick was suggested but a more direct, eponymous title was eventually chosen.

I didn’t want to go into all that in the comment, so I left it hanging. But I thank Ute for asking, because I’d wanted to write this down for a long time, and never did. But my memory was essentially vindicated!

In her later, official, “this is my legacy” bio, All In (“An inspiring and intimate self-portrait of the champion of equality that encompasses her brilliant tennis career, unwavering activism, and an ongoing commitment to fairness and social justice.”), Billie Jean dismisses the Deford bio as a quickie hack job manufactured as part of the nervewracking post-Barnett PR blitz to make her marketable again. It is that, but somehow Deford (and the circumstances) combined to bring out a more authentic Billie Jean than her current biographers do.

The 1982 book is a hoot. She dishes on her colleagues, tells all sorts of nasty funny gossip, calls one famous lady tennis player a “fraud” (I forget which), belabors her old doubles partner Rosie Casals as lazy and dumb (if memory serves she divulges that Rosie went to amusement parks rather than train), and gives Margaret Smith Court her full due as a tennis champion, something she doesn’t in the later bio.

Another thing I remember: the early Billie Jean despised the tennis tour and wanted to destroy it. She thought the reverence for the Grand Slams was ludicrous and even wanted to present a competing tournament to the US Open in the Jersey Meadowlands. She and Larry (who really were a matched pair in their ambitions for tennis; they had deep emotional bond over this) were serious about that. In fact, this idea might well have been Larry’s, and not hers.4

It never got off the ground. Now she presents herself as the Grand Old Lady of Tennis, weeping over the tradition of Wimbledon, and so on. It wasn’t always so. In those days she wanted to dethrone Wimbledon and replace it with a radical, revolutionary men’s and women’s tour - combined. But I digress.

This is glanced on in the Deford bio but not fully fleshed out. That Billie Jean is lost to history, although if anyone is fanatic enough, I think that Peter Bodo’s writing has it - if you can find any of his books.

What gives? Why does Billie Jean King support “trans inclusion” while acknowledging men’s physical superiority in athletics? The following is a jumble of overlapping conjectures with no pretense to being a systematic explanation.

After abandoning her and Larry’s plans to disrupt the tour, she became a staunch organization loyalist. She is also by nature a consensus-builder — that is her most attractive quality. She believes in reaching out and communicating, not ex-communicating.

For this reason she favored tournaments in Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States, while Martina (and Martina’s lap dog Chris Evert) opposed them on feminist grounds. BJK is also opposed to penalizing individual athletes for their country’s politics. Also smart - imagine what would happen if Gaza had become a bone of contention on the tour.

This is the smart, pragmatic, Protestant American in Billie Jean coming to the fore. Achieve radical results with moderate steps. You can’t say it hasn’t worked.

But, while she was unfailingly kind to staff and avoided being entitled or overtly egomaniacal, she craves adoration. BJK frequently and unironically uses the nickname Teddy Tinling gave her—”Madame Superstar”—in All In. Far from arrogance, this reflected the plain girl from Long Beach flattered by the attention lavished on her persona. However, she failed to perceive the underlying irony and acidity in the title, eventually embracing “Madame Superstar” as her virtual alter ego.

BJK is trapped by her past. In 2020, many mistakenly viewed the trans agenda as a natural extension of civil rights. While public opinion has since shifted, she remains committed. Despite the election of a Republican president now applying the force of law, the trans agenda remains dominant across much of elite, rules-making America, a conflict Jennifer Sey tirelessly documents. Billie Jean is no outsider: she is part of this rules-making elite and changing on this issue jeopardizes her place in it.

Mentally anchored to her 1970s liberal Democrat roots, she views her support for the trans agenda as consistent with her identity. Furthermore, as a self-styled consensus-builder, she is unwilling to break from the allies and circles that have secured her status and lifestyle since the Barnett era.

What about Martina then? She is far more left wing than King, but this is one instance in which being an egomaniac is an advantage. It makes her independent. She’s no consensus builder. She’s Martina, the one and only. Yeah, it puts her in a tough position with her leftist allies, but she doesn’t care. Martina does Martina.

Billie Jean craves connection; Martina is a lone wolf and proud of it.

And paradoxically this has put Martina on this one issue on the same side as her bitter opponent — the Reverend Margaret Court.

“And you know with that LGBT, they’ll wish they never put the T on the end of it because, particularly in women’s sports, they’re going to have so many problems.

“You have got young people taking hormones and having changes, by the time they are 17 they are thinking, ‘Now I’m a boy and really I was a girl.’”

To someone like Billie Jean, being on the same side of anything with Margaret Court would be intolerable. So she supports something that could, if put into practice, destroy the very institution she worked her whole life to create: a women’s tennis tour that’s created millionaire celebrity athletes.

Life’s got no shortage of ironies, doesn’t it?

IMG Postscript. IMG went from strength to strength until it reached an apogee in the 1990s when Hughes Norton signed Tiger Woods right after he turned pro in 1996. (Hughes had discovered Tiger as a kid.)

Tiger notoriously fired Hughes in 1998. Norton was cut loose shortly thereafter by Mark McCormack. He disappeared from sports and resurfaced later with a tell-some book, Rainmaker.

The “Tiger Woods Era” (in golf, not the culture) ran from 1997 to 2008. Woods stayed with IMG, repped by Mark Steinberg and “babysat” by Bev Norwood. Hughes and Steinberg might have been Tiger’s agents but Bev was Tiger’s gatekeeper.

After Mark McCormack died, IMG went through a series of takeovers and reinventions, finally dying as a sports management agency in 2011, when Steinberg walked out the door — to found Excel Sports Management.

His first client was Tiger Woods.5

Bev worked at IMG until his death in 2013.

Frank died in 2022.

I remember them both fondly.

Dear Fellow Caitlin Fans,

The last few days have been agony, I realize.

The season is young. Tonight’s game is only the fourth game of the season. So stop the panicking. But you’re frustrated with how things are working out and I feel your pain.

Let’s review the season so far:

• Game 1 (May 9, 2026): Dallas Wings 107, Indiana Fever 104

• Game 2 (May 13, 2026): Indiana Fever 87, Los Angeles Sparks 78

• Game 3 (May 15, 2026): Washington Mystics 104, Indiana Fever 102

Game 1 was a free-for all heartbreaking loss. The 3 wasn’t sinking (CC went two for nine) and there was panic in Caitlinstanland. Never mind her overall performance was brilliant — where’s that logo 3? Oh no! It’s gone forever!!

The second game was a convincing win where everything went through Caitlin - but against a crap team so the nerves were still taut and the White-haters and shitstirrers were still seething.

That third game was a heartbreaker. Omigod people watch basketball for heroic performances like this. With five seconds to go, Sophie Cunningham inbounded the ball to Myisha Hines-Allen, Caitlin cut around a screen, took the handoff from Myisha (who redeemed her earlier awkward play), faded right, and buried the game-tying 7th three-pointer over Kiki Iriafen. Only to see Stephanie White’s crappy coaching blow the whole thing in overtime. We’re mad! I get it!

But, what are we mad about?

Generally speaking, being a sports fan is a masterclass in participating in public stupidity. Most fans scream from a position of absolute ignorance, inventing melodrama to explain away cold tactical realities.

In Stephanie White’s case, it’s: “The coach hates the star.” Guys, that’s just not true. But every now and then, the collective groan of a stadium isn’t completely off the wall. Sometimes, the frustration is entirely justified even if the target is wrong.

Yes, something is fundamentally wrong in how Stephanie White is handling Caitlin Clark. It’s not hatred, it’s stubbornness, unimaginativenss, and a bureaucratic mindset.

What we witnessed recently in the game against the Washington Mystics was a textbook tragedy. I’ll repeat: Caitlin Clark was nothing short of heroic. It was an electrifying, must-watch, 32-point display of basketball brilliance. She threw out eight assists and single-handedly dragged a staggering squad back from the brink with a furious, 17-point fourth-quarter explosion, capping it with that cold-blooded step-back three to force overtime. It was pure, unfiltered genius.

And it was completely wasted.

The undoing of that brilliant night came straight from a coach who appears to have fallen deeply, irreversibly in love with her own mental systems at the expense of active game-management.

Consider the second quarter. Clark is the undisputed engine of the floor, a player who relies on rhythm, momentum, and the physical breakdown of a defense. Yet, White placed her on ice for six straight, consecutive minutes. While Clark sat on the bench, the offense completely collapsed into a frozen scoring drought, and Washington rattled off a devastating 20-9 run.

In the mind of a system-obsessed coach, that six-minute block isn’t a disaster; it’s “load management.” It’s a pre-planned spreadsheet entry meant to pace a player for a long, forty-game season. But you cannot pace your way out of a game slipping away in real-time. Leaving your absolute best playmaker on the bench while the ship takes on water is rigid, bureaucratic stubbornness. It is coaching the game that exists on your whiteboard rather than the one happening on the floor.

And when the roster faced actual adversity: losing Aliyah Boston to a non-contact lower-leg injury late in the third quarter—the inflexibility became fatal. To be fair, that was a brutal blow. But when your star center goes down, a reactive tactician shifts the board. They create space; they run secondary sets; they adapt. Instead, White’s system remained completely unyielding, leaving Clark entirely on an island, forced to manufacture miracles out of thin air just to keep the team competitive.

Superstars dictate the system; the system does not dictate the superstar. True coaching intelligence isn’t drawing up a perfect play; it’s knowing exactly when to step back and let greatness take over.

Basketball wasn’t invented in Michael Jordan’s rookie year. It was the heart and soul of urban and rural American from the forties on.

To understand exactly what is missing from this equation, one has to look back to the absolute pinnacle of basketball intelligence: Red Auerbach. Look him up.

Auerbach did not achieve legendary status because he possessed a complex, impenetrable playbook. His true genius was rooted in trusting his players. Red Auerbach’s brain told him precisely when to sit back, stop tinkering, and just watch when Bill Russell was cooking.

Auerbach understood that his own clipboard was useless compared to Russell’s on court authority. When Russell was orchestrating transitions, timing blocks, and crushing an opponent’s rhythm, Auerbach didn’t try to call hyper-structured half-court sets to reassert his own authority. He didn’t pull Russell for a pre-scheduled breather just because a stopwatch hit a certain mark. He lit his victory cigar, trusted his player, and let genius breathe.

Stephanie White is not Red Auerbach. Where Auerbach built an infrastructure that expanded to accommodate the brilliance of his stars, White is trying to force a more than generational talent into a pre-constructed, claustrophobic box. She is managing the game like a bureaucrat, scolding the team in postgame press conferences for failing to win “her way” through disciplined defensive sets, completely minimizing a historic, breathtaking individual effort that saved them from a blowout.

The most agonizing part of this dynamic is that the franchise is entirely wedded to it. With the WNBA’s new, massive salary cap structure, the front office handed White the keys to the treasury this past offseason, locking down a multi-million dollar roster built to her exact specifications. Because of that massive financial and structural commitment, ownership is locked in. No one is tearing up that contract anytime soon.

What I’m saying is that someone is a little too secure in their job. There are no consequences to White’s screwing up. This is absolute power. Very bad mix.

So we are left with the situation as it is: a genius player with a competent but uninspired coach. We are forced to watch a brilliant, high-powered engine try to drag an incredibly rigid, poorly steered ship across the finish line.

Stephanie White doesn’t hate Caitlin Clark. That’s a fiction for the internet’s more hysterical corners. It’s so much worse than that. She loves her own system, and until that system learns to bend to the reality of transcendent greatness, heroic efforts will continue to be nothing more than brilliant, squandered triumphs.

Malice would actually be easier to fix. If a coach simply dislikes a player, an owner can step in, force a meeting, or make them shake hands and find a professional middle ground.

But you cannot reason someone out of a fundamentalist belief. When a coach truly, deeply loves their own system more than the flesh-and-blood genius on the floor, it ceases to be a strategy and becomes a dogma.

To a systemic dogmatist, a player like Caitlin Clark isn’t an asset to be unleashed; she is a variable that needs to be controlled. White doesn’t recognize Caitlin’s intellect because it’s so far above her. White knows it’s there but she can’t comprehend it — and it makes her jealous. It’s set up a situation where the boss isn’t as smart or gifted as the employee, and isn’t gracious enough (as Lisa Bluder was) to accede to this force of nature gracefully.

But the best bosses understand the job: build the structure, then get out of the way and let the genius do her thing.

I just hope that CC can stay healthy until she can get out of there, go to the Valkyries, and start to cook on her own stove.

Months ago I was obsessed with her, eaten up with rage. At a certain point, I literally said to myself, “Stop.” And I did. I abruptly quit paying attention to her, Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson. It was like amputating a diseased limb. The world caught up with me. They have revealed themselves as as toxic, bankrupt, pathological bottom feeders. And it seems even Trump agrees now. But I do have something to say about her latest stunt, so read on.

If Candace Owens isn’t the most despicable human being in the US, I don’t know who is. She’s actually worse than the Carlson boys and Megyn Kelly, by miles.

When Hind Rajab — who became a perennial cause célèbre and martyr to the Palestinian cause — was killed on January 29, 2024 by Israeli tank fire, Netanyahu said nothing. The IDF spokesman issued a denial, insisting no Israeli forces were operating in the area. When independent investigations by Forensic Architecture, Sky News, and The Washington Post later demonstrated that she and her family had been hit by Israeli armor, the IDF simply dropped the matter. No walk‑back. No clarification. Silence.

The normally loquacious Netanyahu, who had no hesitation engaging publicly with the bizarre conspiracy chatter surrounding Charlie Kirk’s death, said nothing. This was a moment where he could have — no, should have — gone to bat for his country. He’s the fucking Prime Minister.

He should have said, “The buck stops here,” explained what the tanks were doing, and described how impossible it can be for a crew inside an armored vehicle to know who is inside a moving car in a combat zone. It wouldn’t have convinced the “Gaza is Genocide” crowd, but it would have reassured Israelis, American Jews, and their allies.

Instead, Hind Rajab is left hanging around our necks like an effigy for eternity.

But don’t worry guys, Israel had nothing to do with Charlie Kirk’s death! Bibi said so. And said so. And said so.

Upshot: for fucking up the relationship between Israel and one major political party, chickens have come home to shit.

I was going to write something about Michigan’s Democratic politics and demographics but I’ve run out of steam. TL;DR:

In the U.S. system, arms sales don’t require an affirmative “yes” vote from Congress to move forward; they proceed automatically unless Congress passes a JRD to stop them within a strict 30-day window.

S.J.Res. 32, which targeted a $295 million sale of armored Caterpillar bulldozers, failed by a vote of 40–59.

S.J.Res. 138, aimed at stopping a $151.8 million shipment of 1,000-pound bombs, was defeated 36–63.

Both measures were ultimately blocked by a coalition of Republicans and some Democrats, but the votes were significant as more than 80% of the Democratic caucus supported the effort.

Was this political theater with Bernie Sanders as the impresario? Of course, but what isn’t theater in politics? The important thing is that Bernie laid down his marker: arms sales to Israel are no longer smooth sailing. The Democrats will push back.

Sounds fair, huh? Let’s stop this parasitic one-way relationship in which Israel takes, takes, and takes, and the US gives, gives, and gives. Just treat Israel like any other country.

I have a suggestion. If the US decides it doesn’t want to subsidize Israel’s arms purchases, then maybe what Israel should do is start charging for its services.

Pretty much every other country in the world (except the UK) treats the US as a giant research lab. They are all in effect defense freeloaders, That includes my beloved Australia, which spends 1.9% of GDP on defense and which provides nothing except for one of the “Five Eyes” which we could replace, and in any case, the Joint Facility at Pine Gap is hardly a contribution to our technology, it’s just a location. Every country in NATO spends a piffling amount of money on defense. None of them contribute to meaningfully to US defense superiority.

Except one. Israel. They spend a horrific, whopping 8.8% of their GDP on defense. (This has got to stop, but that’s another discussion for another day.) They tax their kids by requiring national service. They tax their workforce heavily… but again, another subject for another day.

If you look strictly at what the United States receives in return — usable defense innovation, battlefield‑validated systems, counter‑UAS breakthroughs, cyber tools, active‑protection technology, missile‑defense architectures, and operational data, the $3.8B annual assistance package is a very low price for that.

I think we should start to lay this out specifically and coldly, and say to the Sanders/Emanuel wing of the Democrat Party: pay up.

The U.S. spends tens of billions annually on domestic R&D programs that never reach operational maturity. That’s from our taxes.

The U.S. pays private defense contractors far more than $3.8 billion for single programs that deliver not much battlefield‑validated insight.

The U.S. skims from Israeli systems and concepts that it then scales through its own industrial base — without paying royalties, licensing fees, or data‑access charges.

No other ally provides this volume of directly usable innovation.

When I say “$3.8B is cheap,” the structural meaning is:

Relative to the value of the R&D pipeline the U.S. absorbs, the cost is low.

In a transactional “you use it, you pay for it” world, Israel would treat these same outputs as commercial assets. Missile‑defense components would come with licensing fees or per‑unit royalties. Joint programs would include shared intellectual‑property rights and revenue from derivative systems. Battlefield data would be structured as a paid service, the way private defense firms charge for testing and evaluation. Cyber and counter‑UAS innovations would be delivered under subscription or upgrade contracts. Instead of assuming that innovation flows one way and industrial scale flows the other, Israel would price the value it creates, and the United States would pay for what it adopts.

His needling baritone grated on my nerves but more substantively, from the start, he’s sucked up to the Republicans and pissed on Democrats. What did he expect? Worship?

And he can’t shut up. After the Kirk assassination he just had to make it all about him. Denying any involvement was unnecessary and degrading. He dragged down the dignity of his office even paying attention to such nonsense. I hope he’s voted out, but I don’t have much hope that any Israeli politician understands the US. None of them do. They think America is the Acela corridor and Hollywood, and it’s not.

And due to the very demographics that the liberal Jewish establishment actively championed, Israel is just quite unpopular. So I think they should stop chasing popularity and be two things (a) useful and (b) poisonous, in the Lee Kwan Yew sense:

Shrimp are unkosher, so be a poison felafel. But forget about popularity and start standing up for yourself without hysteria. (I realize I just went hysterical.)

At the end of the day I don’t think that influencers are that important anyway.

Here’s an anecdote I think of often.

Years ago, around 2008 or so, I went to some kind of arts retreat upstate New York. Two of the other people were an Englishwoman and her teenage daughter. (Travel tip: arts retreats are a great way to get to know a country and its people.) We hit it off and we met in Manhattan before they went home. Not sure why but the conversation got political. I usually watch myself when this happens but in this case I said something I thought “everyone” agreed on. It was about the weapons of mass destruction that turned out not to be there. Remember all that? Remember how we were “all” sour on the war?

She looked at me steadily and said, with understated British cool: “Saddam Hussein would have had to have been sorted out eventually.”

I piped down. She was right.

The people are wiser than the influencers, who are mostly a bunch of psychopathic attention hogs.

Rare breed? The very fact that this is a “thing” is proof of societal decay.

Caitlin and her teammate Sophie Cunningham (see below) had injury-hampered 2025 seasons. Sophie’s ligament tear happened as a result of a typical basketball play but Caitlin got banged around mercilessly her first and second years and I think her body and mind just rebelled.

The W just renegotiated a whopper deal with the league. If they want to be taken seriously they’ll have to cut down on the roller derby hits disguised as “physical play.” It’s one thing for cheap labor to be destroyed by cheap shots. The ladies are now expensive horseflesh. Protect your investments. And allowing your meal ticket to be destroyed is sheer insanity…

First question: If the United States truly crushed Iran’s military as completely as some people claim, why is the United States negotiating with Iran at all?

A country that has actually destroyed an adversary’s military doesn’t negotiate with them. It dictates terms, imposes conditions, and behaves unilaterally. The United States has done exactly that in past conflicts when an opponent’s military was genuinely neutralized. The fact that Washington is negotiating tells you that Iran still has capabilities the United States considers meaningful enough to manage rather than ignore.

Second question: If Israel supposedly forced the United States into this war and was directing U.S. actions, then why did the United States abruptly impose a ceasefire that leaves Israel exposed to further missile attacks?

If Israel were in control of U.S. decision‑making, the ceasefire would not have been timed in a way that leaves Israel vulnerable. The United States halted operations when it reached the point where continuing no longer made sense according to its own cost-benefit analysis. That decision reflects U.S. priorities, not Israeli ones. The war could resume if conditions change but the decision is America’s, not Israel’s.

Sadly I missed the height of the cherry blossom season in Central Park being depressed (how stupid) but I found a few nice Yoshinos.

Ironically, yesterday I was about to backtrack on my prediction of a few days ago:

This is all water under the bridge now (or not, who knows what will happen with this ceasefire?) but I think it’s important to confess the reason I was about to backtrack: while I factored in the immense complications of the new, fluid, drone-and-hypersonic missile battlefield, I didn’t take into account that Iran is right across a thin body of water and that the Marines would be sitting ducks once having taken these islands (and yes, they would have to occupy them - read on).

But conceptually I don’t think I was wrong at all. Quite likely the difficulty of the op factored into the decision to call it off (or postpone it, again, we don’t know).

This is small potatoes in the big scheme, but I want to say something about a mini-ruckus it caused with a commenter.

My prediction was based on facts, and it ended with an emotional flourish. You can disagree with me about the emotional flourish, but not the facts. I enjoy being corrected on the facts. That’s why I keep my comments open. When I’m wrong, as I was here, I acknowledge it. I enjoy reality. It grounds you and gives you the opportunity to rethink premises.

What I won’t do is allow my Substack comments to degenerate to shouting, sneering, and hostile one-upmanship. I won’t tolerate that. You’ll get banned.

The modern battlefields is a labyrinth of complicated technology and a million moving parts. People can scoff at it all they want. “War has always been terrible. How would you like facing a 6’5” Gaul swinging a long sword?” My answer: “I’d rather face one of them than a runt with a bunch of drones.”

Someone who made a habit of pestering me here and in “Notes” since May 2024 took umbrage at my comparison of Kharg with Iwo Jima. In no way was I discounting the difficulty of Iwo Jima and the bravery of the Marines, but in 2026 the reality is different.

It’s perfectly fine to say that the human cost of Iwo (26K casualties; 7K dead) puts it in a different category — that’s legit. That’s the value system speaking. I acknowledge that. I even share it on one level! But that wasn’t what I referring to. I was referring to the operational difficulty of taking Kharg and the other islands in the Gulf.

There are some claims that are “not even wrong,” i.e., they are unfalsifiable and not even worthy of the effort of proving them unfalsifiable. This is falsifiable but apologies to Pauli, I’m using it:

TL;DR:

1. On Ballistics: The “unalterable trajectory” is a myth; modern missiles use calculus and terminal seekers to hit moving targets with surgical precision. (Honestly, there’s no reason to proceed. This is such a blooper there’s no need to continue. But I will…)

2. On Drones: You don’t need to sink a ship to win; you just need to blind its sensors, and modern drones are built specifically for that “mission kill.”

3. On Airheads: Trading naval gunfire for helicopter landings is a death sentence in an age of shoulder-fired missiles and dense air defenses.

4. On Tunnels: Leaving an enemy force in a tunnel complex is providing them with a permanent, fortified ambush point overlooking the world’s most critical chokepoint.

Non-TL;DR

1. Ballistic missiles aren’t a threat to warships because they follow “unalterable” trajectories - WRONG. Just stop. This is wrong.

   1. Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles (ASBMs), use terminal guidance and maneuverable reentry vehicles to successfully track and strike moving naval targets.1 Iran possesses several operational ASBMs, most notably the Khalij Fars and the Hormuz-2, which are specifically designed with terminal seeker technology to hit moving naval targets at ranges of approximately 300 km.

2. The commenter appears to be obsessed with the notion that missiles can’t be adjusted to hit moving targets. Jesus, has he never heard of calculus? This is an engineering problem that was solved decades ago. Imagine an admiral in WW2 on the deck saying, “Get me a weapon that can change coordinates in mid-flight and take those suckers out.” Well guess what Admiral, we did it!2 Calculus applied to this problem works in two stages:

   2. The Adjustment: Once the missile re-enters the atmosphere, its onboard seeker (optical or radar) “locks on” to the actual ship. If the ship has moved from the predicted spot, the software calculates the error and adjusts the missile’s fins or thrusters in real-time to close the gap.

      My commenter is stuck in 1944 thinking a missile is just a bigger artillery shell. In reality, it’s a flying computer that does the math at Mach 5.

3. Landing Marines via helicopter (”airheads”) against a defended island without heavy suppressive fire is a recipe for a massacre. Helicopters are extremely vulnerable to MANPADS (shoulder-fired missiles) and basic anti-aircraft guns, both of which Iran has in abundance on those islands.

      1. These aren’t just guys with rifles hiding in holes. Iranian “tunnel complexes” on islands like Abu Musa or Sirri are underground fortresses housing anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), drone launchers, and radar arrays. They’re nodes in a sophisticated military network. They serve as the “eyes” for the mainland’s long-range missile batteries.

      2. Even if the guys in the tunnels don’t fire a single shot, they are providing real-time targeting data on every ship that passes. You can’t “prevent military use” of an island while the enemy is still using it as a forward observation post.

      3. Because they are in contact with the mainland, they can coordinate a “saturated” attack—waiting for the mainland to fire a volley of missiles, then popping out of their tunnels to fire their own locally-stored missiles at the same time to overwhelm a ship’s defenses. Leaving them there is like leaving a burglar in your basement just because you’ve locked the kitchen door. He’s still got a phone, he’s still got tools, and he’s definitely not “sitting there” doing nothing.

      4. You cannot claim to “prevent Iranian forces from using [the islands] for military purposes” while those same forces are literally still there, armed, and holding the high ground (or the “low” ground in this case).

      5. Leaving armed IRGC units inside fortified tunnels isn’t “ignoring” them; it’s leaving a loaded gun pointed at your own fleet’s head in a region where every square inch of the island acts as a launch platform for anti-ship missiles.

For this brilliant reasoning, I award the commenter this medal.

My commendation:

Finally, given the cease-fire, if Kharg et al was so comparatively easy, why didn’t we do it? Why did Trump agree to this cease-fire?

Perhaps because it’s a really knotty problem that we don’t want to tackle just now? How about this: Because at this point Trump wasn’t willing to pay the price of the ticket in manpower. We’d have lost men, and to modern Americans, in this context, that’s unacceptable. You armchair generals can wail all you want, but very few Americans were willing to risk Marine lives for Kharg Island.

Here’s the situation as I see it. It’s subjective but I think a lot of Americans share it.

On February 28, 2026 I woke up and we were bombing Iran. No idea why. No one had said anything. There was no argument in the Congress. To compound the weirdness, it was the US and Israel - “allies.” I got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I had supported the 12-day June war on complete “America First” grounds and I was thoroughly unconcerned about it provoking a groundswell of antisemitism. I honestly can’t even remember my reasoning for the whole thing and I’m damned if I’m going to look up a bunch of old posts to prove a point that doesn’t need to be made. Suffice it to say I support the 12-day war.

But “Epic Fury” shocked and disconcerted me. I put up a “Note” explaining that I hoped it wouldn’t backfire and result in something even worse than what we have.

My friendly commenter responded to my note with this: Nothing could be worse than the Mullahs, expressed with his trademarked sneering contempt.

We had an unproductive exchange which ended with my removing his final double down.4

Well, I think there could be worse things than the Mullahs and to say that there can’t be shows want of imagination and zero historical knowledge.

Two that come to mind are “Somalia on the Gulf,” and a military junta made up of hard core Persian nationalists who are smart enough to cut the “Death to America” crap and focus on being a real pain in the ass in the Gulf, as Iran was before 1979. They would have the added disadvantage (to Israel) of being totally acceptable to the rest of the world, while functioning as one of the chief nodes of Palestinian nationalism. (I’m conjecturing here. I’m creating worst case scenarios.)

I hope that someone in the Pentagon is thinking about this.

Oh, my other reason for that sick feeling was because I thought this alliance was bad for Israel.

When a small country joins up with a big country and that big country is a damn superpower, the smaller country gives up independence of action. Its strategy now depends on midterms and scandals and the whims of a mercurial President who has all sorts of motives, not to mention popularity in a demographically changing society.

This ceasefire has put Israel in the position of having to hold its fire with respect to Iran while accepting missile fire. You could say Trump hung Israel out to dry. Maybe he had good reason to but I’m not happy about that.

A Man For All Seasons

My mother took my bros and me to see this when it first came out in 1966. (1966 was something of a holdover from 1965 — a golden year for movies - and Broadway - we were big theater fans.)

A Man For All Seasons won six Academy Awards when that meant something. Sure, they’ve always been silly and political, and great actors were ignored (Richard Burton never got an Oscar despite being nominated seven times, nor did Peter O’Toole) but usually the guys who won deserved it.

This movie deserved it in spades. I’m not an expert on Thomas More, the Reformation, or Henry VIII (although I have seen his pre-obesity armor at the Met) but I thought the issue of conscience v. state was brilliantly handled.

The acting was - how shall I say it? - towering. The production values were next level. I will not offer one criticism although my incessantly nitpicky brain did come up with some. NOT TODAY SATAN.

This is a great movie. See it.

Most satisfying was the visual feast this film offers. It’s a movie of colors, gold, velvet, textures… you can feel the moisture of Britain in the walls and the earth.

But the most important part of the movie, the part that stands above all the rest, which lifts it from great to immortal, is this scene:

The scene made a profound impression on my kiddie brain and watching it as an adult, I’m even more impressed. I return to it every often when I need a boost.

And, it’s distorted to mean “liberal” and Miranda Rights and whatever the ACLU has cooked up.

And we defend the powerful as well as the weak.

The Devil isn’t despised, and he isn’t weak. He’s powerful and adored. It’s easy to be sympathetic to the wretched of the earth — not to the Devil. But even the Devil is due the benefit of the law.

There must be something more powerful than the powerful - man’s law.

While this movie was showing, the US was undergoing trauma in the South because Southern states were flouting the law, as Minnesota and the sanctuary cities are doing now. The President could have cut down the law and arrested the Klansmen who killed Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman. They were obviously guilty. But he couldn’t. The law had to grind its way to a conclusion; eventually it did, somewhat unsatisfactorily, which is what happens with the law. Same deal in Minnesota. Like Roper, I would absolutely love for the President to put Minnesota under martial law and arrest every ICE protester. But I have Thomas More to tell me that we can’t do that. Perhaps if Renee Good and Alex Pretti had seen this movie they’d be alive today.

Kiddie review: Wow!

Escape From New York

I saw this the night it opened, or maybe the night after, in July 1981. I had a comp ticket but I’d have paid to see it if I hadn’t. It was a must see movie in my crowd.

We loved it. The audience laughed out loud at the depiction of dystopian 1997 New York because it was so accurate. When one of the characters said to Snake, the main character, before they drop him in Manhattan (paraphrasing): “Avoid the subways. That’s were ‘the crazies’ sleep” the audience broke up. True then, true now.

OK, so how did I rate it as an adult?

It held up surprisingly well. Very enjoyable even from the perspective of two generations in which its dire predictions didn’t come true. NYC in 1981 was a total horror story, a nerve-wracking nightmare of a place. By 1997, NYC had become livable and walkable with a radically lower violent crime rate.

Don’t believe the hipster assholes who say that it got “Disneyfied,” cleaned up, and lost its authenticity after Giuliano.

I am a native and I am telling you the truth here. That never happened. NYC is uncleanupable. It is inherently chaotic and dirty, but not inherently violent and nihilistic - quite the opposite. What characterizes “Nieuw Amsterdam” is a broad tolerance of just about anything as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the common good, which is what happened from 1970 to 1992.

What did happen is that the crime rate, via good hard police work and political will, was crushed, and the prostitution in the Times Square area was banished. That bothers leftists because they love chaos, crime, and perversion, but NYC never became the sanitized white picket fence nightmare that dumbass leftists write about. It can’t.

My adult review of Escape: Carpenter did a great job of showing what a catastrophe NYC had become in 1981. The production values and location choice were good.

When I first saw it, I wondered where he filmed it because I was thinking “close but no cigar.” My estimation of the location choices is went up. NYC is a hard place to replicate and Carpenter did as good a job as possible of finding locations that evoked the most blasted out parts of 1981 lower Manhattan. The CGI of Manhattan Island with helicopters swooping overhead was surprisingly good.

There’s a scene that takes place in Central Park. I remember in 1981 saying to myself, “That’s not Central Park.” This time the scene didn’t bother me as much because Carpenter actually did find a place that resembled standing on Sheep Meadow’s south looking north, where you can see apartment blocks looming on the west side. Apologies if this is too NYC-centric. (The link shows an east to west POV.)

Kurt Russell’s performance was mesmerizing then and it didn’t age. I noticed the second time around that the character hardly says anything: it’s a physical, inhabited performance, quoting straight from Clint Eastwood’s characterization of “The Man With No Name.” I didn’t know about the quotation at the time; it’s something that occurred to me on second viewing. (I’m late to the party; it’s been extensively documented.)

Last word: I had misremembered who played the punk character, Romero. I misremembered the actor as Rockets Redglare, a LES denizen, or perhaps he was a local punk who hadn’t been above 14th Street for 20 years.

No, the part was played by the late character actor, Frank Doubleday. He was terrific. Doubleday was, for an actor, a very normal human being, and he played a denizen of Lower Manhattan better than the real thing ever could have. I’m in awe.

Upshot: Escape From New York totally did not suck. Worth a view.

Gallipoli

This is one of those cases where reservations I felt watching a movie crystallized on second viewing — I’ll explain exactly why, but I must preface my review with this: movies are acted, and the actor is a huge reason for one’s responses to what one sees on film, no matter what else goes on.

And it would be dishonest not to point this out:

Mel Gibson was my generation’s heart throb. Watching Gallipoli after (too many) years, it’s easy to see why. His early appeal doesn’t date. He’s a crazy, steroid-addled bellowing nutcase now, but in 1981, this was Mel Gibson:

There’ll always be a little place in my heart, not for him (that’s dead and gone), but for the girls who swooned over him in the movies, because I was one. As long as you don’t fall into kooky erotomania it’s a benign part of life.

I wasn’t watching Gallipoli in 1981: I was watching Mel Gibson in Gallipoli. In 1981 I had quiet reservations about both the storytelling and the final scenes in Gallipoli (which was a relatively small part of the movie - 20 minutes out of 111 was devoted to the Dardanelles campaign). I found Mark Lee to be dull. It’s one thing to be self-effacing, it’s another to be… dull.

In 2026, I watched both, but with older eyes. Gibson had the same raw magnetism that I’d seen in 1981.2 Mark Lee was as nondescript as he was in 1981. The stuff about his running was a pack of cliches. I enjoyed the Australia scenes because I enjoy Australia scenes. Who doesn’t?

My major reservation is that the movie misrepresented the story it was telling, and that’s a big deal.

Gallipoli tells us more about post-Vietnam Australia than it does about 1914. That’s his prerogative as a filmmaker - it’s my prerogative to point out that the picture is inaccurate.

He portrayed the men of the First Australian Imperial Force (AIF) as gullible dupes of a “war fever” instigated by a distant power rather than as participants in a global cause they believed in fervently.

In Weir’s narrative, the protagonists Archy and Frank are presented with a pastoral, innocent simplicity. Their journey toward enlistment is framed through the lens of sport—running, competition, and a thirst for adventure.

These boys were lured into a slaughterhouse they didn’t understand by a propaganda machine they couldn’t see through. This is leftist-Commie distortion.

In 1914, Australia was a highly literate, politically engaged society. The men who joined the AIF were not simply “boys looking for a lark”; they were citizens of a Dominion who followed international news, debated the “German Menace,” and understood the geopolitical stakes of a shattered Europe. (Below I’ll give you a truly fascinating document of the time which underscores this.)

The most significant historical omission in Gallipoli is the genuine, widespread fervent loyalty to the British Empire. In the film, the British are often portrayed as the “other”—callous officers and incompetent planners who treated Australian lives as disposable. This reflects a post-Vietnam cynicism toward “big power” military leadership, but it ignores the cultural reality of the time.

In 1914, most Australians viewed themselves as “Independent Australian Britons.” Their loyalty to the Crown was not a submissive “cringe”; it was a foundational part of their identity. To them, the British Empire was the greatest vehicle for civilization, law, and liberty in the world.

Australians signed up in huge numbers (38% of the male population; over 400,000 men) and every one was a volunteer. They weren’t fighting for a foreign power; they were fighting for their world. By failing to articulate this deep, sincere conviction, Weir makes their sacrifice seem like the result of a trick rather than a principled stand.

While the tactical failures at Gallipoli were very real, the film’s emotional core relies on the idea that these men were betrayed by a system they shouldn’t have trusted - because they were Australian and they were being exploited by a hostile foreign power.3

In reality, the volunteers of the AIF were so committed to the cause that even after the horrors of Gallipoli were known, they chose to keep fighting as volunteers. (It is true that enlistment numbers went down, but they never stopped.) This ideological commitment that goes far beyond being a “dupe.”

They weren’t running toward a finish line; they were fighting for an Empire they considered their own.

Upshot: See it for Mel. Make up your own mind. I’m not seeing this one again.

It appeared in The Advertiser, Friday 28 August 19144 24 days after the King declared war on Germany. Matthew Kropenyeri, described as “an aborigine from Point McLeay Mission Station.. a self-educated man of more than ordinary mental capacity, although, a full blooded native”5 analyzed the situation clearly:

He didn’t like the newfangled way of war.

Looks like Kropinyeri called it right on the nose. An Aborigine from a Mission knew the stakes and he knew what was going to happen.

Maybe there were others.
